The setting: Israel is being crushed under the literal weight of King Eglon of Moab—a man described as “extremely fat.” Enter Ehud, a man with a unique strategic advantage: he was left-handed. In a world where every soldier was right-handed and checked for weapons on the left hip, Ehud was invisible.
1. The Concealed Weapon (The 18-Inch Blade)
Ehud forged a double-edged dagger, about 18 inches long, and strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes. When he went to deliver a “tribute” (basically a bribe) to the King, the guards checked his left side and found nothing. He walked right into the King’s private upper room.
2. The Gross Reality: When the Fat Swallowed the Blade
“I have a secret message for you, O King,” Ehud whispered. As the King stood up, Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the dagger from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon’s belly. The Bible doesn’t hold back on the details: the King was so fat that the handle sank in after the blade, and his fat closed over it.
“The hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the dagger out… and the refuse came out.”
3. The Perfect Escape
Ehud locked the doors from the inside and walked out calmly. The King’s servants saw the locked doors and thought, “Oh, the King is just relieving himself in the closet.” They waited so long that Ehud had already escaped to the mountains before they found their King dead on the floor.
