Word: Pharisee (Hebrew: Perushim)
Meaning: “Separated ones.”
Context: A powerful religious and political group in ancient Israel. They were famous for their extreme devotion to the Jewish Law (Torah). They wanted to stay “pure” and “separate” from the corruption of the world, but eventually became famous for judging others and being hypocrites.
In modern language, if someone calls you a Pharisee, it’s not a compliment. It’s a polite way of calling you a hypocrite. But interestingly, the Pharisees started with a very good intention: to be excellent.
They didn’t want to be mediocre in their faith. They wanted to follow God perfectly. So, what went wrong? They fell into the trap of Legalism—valuing the “Policy” over the “People.”
The Evolution of a ‘Good Person’ into a ‘Pharisee’
The transition is subtle. It usually follows three steps that we still see in modern offices and communities today:
- Step 1: High Standards. You want to do things right. (This is good!)
- Step 2: Extra Rules. You create 100 small rules to protect the 1 big rule.
- Step 3: Judgment. You start looking down on anyone who doesn’t follow your 100 extra rules.
By the time Jesus arrived, the Pharisees had created so many rules that they made life miserable for everyone else. They focused on the Outside (looking perfect) while their Inside (the heart) was full of pride.

The Modern ‘Pharisee’ Trap
You don’t have to be religious to be a Pharisee. You can be a Pharisee in your career, your diet, or your social media presence.
- The Corporate Pharisee: The manager who follows the HR manual to the letter but ignores the mental health of their team.
- The Social Pharisee: The person who “performs” virtue online but is unkind to the people they actually live with.
Jesus’ biggest problem with them was Hypocrisy—acting like a mask (the Greek word for hypocrite literally means ‘stage actor’).
Insight: The Cure for the Pharisee
The cure is Humility. Realizing that the rules were made to serve us, not for us to be slaves to the rules.
Today, don’t just focus on looking “correct.” Focus on being “kind.” If your excellence makes you arrogant, it’s not excellence—it’s just a costume. Take off the mask. Be human. That’s where the real connection starts.
